Shaman King 2021 reboot Review.

Shaman King 2021

Netflix had streamed a new Shaman King 2021 reboot. But for me, this will be my first viewing of this Anime as I did not watch the older 2001 version of it. So my review will not be comparing the two Anime but will be only on how the 2021 version is.

But wait, why not check out our other titles before getting into this. Like our recent piece on Wakakozake or maybe even check out our article on Natus Vincere Esports and its history. Or the most read work I did called Scissor Seven review and Fumetsu no Anata e Review.

Introduction to Shaman King

Shaman King 2021

As first impressions go, Shaman King 2021 reboot felt that it came into being a little too late in the game. ( now I know why as this is the rebooted version). But as I was watching it, it kinda ignited the inner child in me. It felt the same as that of Dragon Ball Z or Naruto kinda feels but for me personally. But this had much more mature storylines in there whilst still maintaining the excitement that a child-targeted animation would.

Like I said this very much felt like a naruto style genre and hence that is why younger audiences would be attracted to it. As the characters and power-ups that were incorporated into the anime were simple but entertaining. The Adult me now would prefer an Action Adventure like that of the quirky and much more sarcastic humour of Saitama in which case many younger audiences would not like or “get”.

The Animation of Shaman King

Shaman King

The Animation of Shaman King 2021 reboot does feel like a work of the early 2000s animation and maybe they could have updated a lot of the characters and scenarios better to match the era it’s in. However, without seeing the First series of 2001, I cannot comment on how much of an improvement its made or on any similarities that exist between the Two Versions but still, the animation does look childish and outdated. Apparently, if one is a fan of the Manga, this show is an excellent adaptation but even so, as a newcomer, I am pretty pleased with the show.

As I am watching the Shaman King 2021 reboot, I realise that this series seems to not have much of those filler episodes which is usually seen in other anime series as the story kept going steadily from one episode to another. But whilst some of these ‘fillers’ are anime mood killers and tend to go over the top making the viewing boring and chore-like. Some I feel are important if it is like an add-on to the development of the anime story and character development. I wished this anime would have had more plot advancement episodes in between to really allow the viewer to take in the anime story and character progression and not feel rushed.

Final Thoughts

The story gets a high 9/10, it was interesting and refreshing, maybe because I haven’t seen an old-school anime in a while. The journey to becoming a Shaman king of an underdog protagonist and him developing his character along the way meeting new and interesting characters that add to the fun of the story. To battle his greatest foe, gave me youthful goosebumps. In fact, it’s the same excitement I felt as I was watching Ninku in my early childhood.

The Art and Animation in the Shaman King 2021 reboot are decent enough but overall it felt too outdated. This perhaps would get my least ranking as in 2021 I would have expected better animation. This frustrated me a bit because the characters, powers etc, could have been animated and drawn in a more kick-ass way. It’s the same feeling I have when I watched Pokemon. The Pokemon powers and idea are super awesome but the childish art just kills it for me.

The sound and voice acting are also of high quality and I feel that they are done exceptionally well to reflect the characters and storyline.

The Characters, however, take the cake as they are very well executed. All characters in Shaman king have their own personas and unique personalities, dreams and lessons to teach us the viewers.
