One Piece Quotes: Memorable Life changing Lessons

One Piece is one Anime that has eluded me for years now and it is up until recently that I am able to watch the series. The very first thing that strikes my vision is how good this anime is as a pure shonen action entertainment. It is unpretentious, and it does what it is good at very well. This article is about all the Memorable Quotes and Life Lessons. Thank you Oda for such a beautiful and interesting anime.

Before we get into it, do check our selection of Best One Piece Arcs. Or maybe you want to know our picks for Best Villain in the One Piece World, do check that too. And also, if you want something a bit more philosophical and deep, do check out my review on Fumetsu no Anata e and One Punch Man. So let’s go back to some of my all-time favourite quotes.

As I watched this after having watched Dragon Ball Z and Naruto, I can say this falls into that category of long, really-really long scenes and storylines with lots of filler episodes in between. But, the Character designs and development are very well done and even the villains take an important role in character development.

But this is not a review; it would be stupid of me to even try to write a review on it. But, it is what it is. An Action-Adventure Shonen Entertainment Anime with long, lengthy fight scenes, fillers in between and lots of declaratory remarks by the Protagonist.

And as I travel along the journey of this vast sea of episodes that don’t seem to have an end, I come across a few quotable quotes which have stuck with me and which I will be using in my sessions but mostly to annoy people around me. I will try to find a few good ones from each character of the Straw Hat Pirate but trust me there is no shortage of really good quotes.

Let’s start with a quote from Luffy, the protagonist, the Captain of the Straw Hat Pirates.

One Piece Quotes Luffy Captain of the strawhat Pirates

“I love heroes, but I don’t want to be one. Do you even know what a hero is? For example, you have some meat. Pirates will feast on the meat, but the hero will distribute it among the people! I want to eat the meat!”

– Luffy, One Piece

This quote may sound selfish and childish, but there is so much depth to it. It shows, in fact, how easily a difficult concept can be explained in simple terminology.’ I don’t want to be a hero. It’s too much of a responsibility, is what I think he may have meant, but if you are a fan of One Piece, you know he is not going to say it outright.

Another notable and relatable quote is by Franky where he says…

“The government says your existence is a crime, but no matter what kind of weapons you may hold, just being alive isn’t a sin! There’s no crime in living!”

– Franky, One Piece

This quote is quite relatable, especially in terms of people just looking to make a living and live, but yet are suppressed by forces beyond their control.

As a counsellor who has fought against the government’s authoritarian rule in demanding for better workers’ rights and living wages, I found this quote quite relatable.

Now this particular quote comes from, in my opinion, the most well-developed character in one piece, the long-nosed “Captain” Usopp, who with his character, reminds us all that everyone is uniquely different but everyone has a place and a role to play. His character shows us how important it is for us to find our place in society using our unique skills, potentials, talents because while we can be just a storytelling daydreamer in one scenario, we can be a hero in another.

“There comes a time when a man has to stand and fight! That time is when his friends’ dreams are being laughed at! And I won’t let you laugh at that!”

– Captain Usopp

As a character in one piece, this quote sums him up entirely. It is a quote for the century. Simple, yet packing heavy artillery. Think about it… what that means to you as a person.

“What good is a treasure if I am alone?”

– Nami, One Piece

Nami is another character who saw tremendous growth not just in terms of character development but in actual drawable animation styling. I have no complaints……….

Oh yeah!! Quotable quotes. Yes, this quote by Nami, is so beautiful because it carries meaning that is basic to our understanding of human life. What good is the world’s treasurer if we are but alone?

Nico Robin is a weird character for me because I keep on focusing on how badly her nose is drawn. Maybe she is supposed to be drawn as a sexy, sharp nosed-woman but it did not come off right. Even with the evolution of the anime and the other characters, Robin’s Nose did not sit right with me. But there are plenty of quotable quotes from her that I can even use or have used in different usages even during my counselling sessions. For example, and I will pick only three quotes,

Nico Robin the Archeologist of the Strawhat Pirates

“Fools who don’t respect the past are likely to repeat it.”

“Sometimes the only thing you have to doubt is your own common sense.”

“Before the heart of truth, there is no need for words.”

– Nico Robin, One Piece.

These are somewhat been used by myself when I am with a client and it’s practical in terms of trying to make the client understand a concept better.

In their travels, the Straw hat crew come in a very unique and funny character, Brook. He is quite quirky, and funny. However, there is this deep kind of connection I feel towards this character as well.  An outgoing person, with dad-jokes level humour, but with dark grim undertones. For example, some of his quotes, which are so good, are also quite grim. Look at this quote for example when he says…

“What do you know of death? Have you ever died? You think death will preserve your cause forever? Ridiculous! Death leaves nothing behind! Once a person passes on, nothing remains but dead bones. If there is one thing I can’t stand, it is a person with no respect for life.”

– Brook, One Piece

It’s dark, but it’s positive too. Lets us think beyond death and allows us to think of the way we are supposed to live. It’s simply awesome. That’s what it is. This is a Brook Quote after all.

But another grim character and quite gloomy if you ask me is Roronoa Zoro. I wonder if there is any link to the hero swordsman “the mask of zorro”? Because in this anime, Roronoa Zoro reminds me of the masked vigilante Zorro created by Johnston Mc Culley.

His quote and quite a Zoro quote I might add,

“Only those who have suffered long, can see the light within the shadows,”

Just gives me chills. It speaks of struggles and the human predicament. It speaks of an internal war with agony and suffering, but it speaks also of victorious victory. Again, that’s such a Zoro quote amongst the many other Roronoa Zoro quotes.

Just in case you doubt, here are a few others :

Zoro the 2nd captain of the Strawhat Pirates
Source: Eiichiro Oda (c) One Piece production committee

“Bring on the hardship. It’s preferred in a path of carnage.”

“When the world shoves you around, you just gotta stand up and shove back. It’s not like somebody’s gonna save you if you start babbling excuses.”

“When I decided to follow my dream, I had already discarded my life.”

– Roronoa Zoro, One Piece

And straight out of Zoro most Epic Scene,

“Nothing… Happened.” !!

Another quirky character in the straw hat team is Sanji, the hopeless romantic and the truth mirror that reflects most men’s desires. His character development is quite interesting in my opinion. He went from a sleazy womanizer to almost a role model to how men should treat women but not quite as well… because then that would have completely thrown away the original character but it’s quite interesting to see that progress. In light of that, his quotes as you may have guessed have a lot to do with women.

Sanji the Cook of the Strawhat Pirates

For example, he says,

“Men who can’t wipe away the tears from a woman’s eyes aren’t real men”.

This quote is true in its truest sense. In today’s world of social media and anonymity, it’s easiest to find keyboard warriors who would shame and degrade women and girls easily and this behaviour is usually brought about by years of conformity to toxic masculinity in society but for someone who loves women and respects them, they would be the one that needs to come out and protect them and wipe away their tears.

For a character like Sanji, whose only fault is to love women too much without restraint, he goes on to say in order to protect a woman he cares about…

“I don’t care if you’re a god. If you lay even one finger on Nami-san, I’ll become the devil of the blue sea!”

– Sanji, One Piece

This quote is an extension of the kind of person who Sanji is. Not just perverted thoughts, but an actual man with substance.

Chopper the Doctor of the Strawhat Pirates

Lastly, there is Tony Tony Chopper, the Doctor of the Crew, but, he is one character I cannot understand what the creators were going for. I’ll admit his style of ‘Hiding But Not really’ is kinda funny and his gullible nature makes for some funny scenes, but overall I just could not wrap my head around him. As a character, however, his personality and all of his quotes portray him as an individual that needs constant self-affirmation and is someone who seeks to attach themselves to another to verify their own existence, even though they have unique qualities of their own. Naturally, the quote best suited to him is when he says,

“I’m gonna try even harder and be helpful to everyone!”

– Tony Tony Chopper, One Piece

Well, to sum up, that’s the Crew. But we all know that these quotes just skim the exciting legendary Anime One Piece has become. The Journey that the Straw Hat Pirate takes you on is an exciting one. Long but exciting and as a fan of Anime that has good character development and progression in animation style, this is definitely one for the books.

“I’m gonna be King of the Pirates”

-Monkey D. Luffy
