Komi Can’t Communicate review – Episode 3 & 4.

Komi can't Communicate

You can find this anime on Netflix India right now. It’s a fun and comedic high school based anime that has had 2 good solid episodes so far. If you are a fan of light comedy with a fun storyline, then ‘komi can’t communicate’, hits all the right spots.

But before we get into it, if you want my review of the first 2 episodes of the anime, you can check it out on my Komi Can’t Communicate review. Do check out my Best One Piece Quotes as well. And if you like One Piece, then you must check out NEOtakus’ Top Ten One Piece Arcs and Best Villains.

After Episode 2, Komi has made 2 friends so far–Tadano and Najimi. Now, we know that Komi’s aim is to make 100 friends. Which Tadano, by circumstances, became the first. With Tadano’s help, though, Najimi’s introduction was complete. But this is simply because, even though all efforts by Tadano had miserably failed, Najimi was a people’s person. He was also Tadano’s childhood friend and so the hunt for more friends continued.

Episode 3

That brings us to Episode 3–Its Just Stage Fright. Plus more. In this episode, we are straight away introduced to a new character, Himiko Agari. She’s a nervous girl with a high anxiety level. And as we shall see, one with a really weird perspective of the social standing of people in a friendship. At the start of the episode, we see Himiko in the school library who, as mention has high anxiety levels. Especially when people stare at her. And this anxiety goes through the roof when she realises it was Komi who is staring at her. Like most of her peers, Himiko had placed Komi on a pedestal with extra exaggerated characteristics of who Komi is and what she is like. However, as the story reveals, misjudgement and unrealistic thinking have just made a simple situation complicated than necessary.

We are not gonna go any further into details. Because, for obvious reasons, it will spoil the show. But a very important lesson comes out of this initial interaction. We can see here the two types of anxiety that people would also face in real-life situation. One would stare at another human for an awkward amount of time just to gather up a simmer of courage to say, ‘Hi’. And the other who is prone to anxiety attacks if she feels like the world is staring at her. She would freak out in even the smallest situations of these kinds.

However, in the anime, this situation allowed for Komi to add to her friend’s list. A new but really weird individual to be friends with. Mainly because when Himiko was given the choice of becoming Komi’s friend, she panicked as she deemed herself not worthy. But then goes on to say that she can be her Dog instead of this goddess being. Now, at that point, I know that this character is gonna bring me some laughs. And if you cannot find humour in the way she says it, then better move on and watch something else.

I will, however, say that I hope they incorporate more of the social anxiety of Himiko which could in itself become a great supporting sub-theme to the overall anime. I felt they did not materialize this aspect at all with the addition of Himiko’s quirky humour. Maybe and I do also hope they explore the overall issue of social anxiety more detailed as they are now. There are multiple characters that can express this issue in a profound, yet comedic way.

However, Episode 3 for me is packed with hilarity and the scene where Komi, who has never had a phone, suddenly brings a ‘flip phone’ (Children, Flip Phones are Mobile phones that can be folded in half and it was one of the best inventions in mobile phone history) and wanted to have her newly found friend’s phone number was really top tier comedy. Especially how Himiko responded. (Again, if you did not find that funny,…..move on).

We also see the first blossom of Love in this episode and it involves a Flip Cell phone, Najimi’s quick mind and Himiko’s antics. Watch to see how. The second half of the episode covered what we have already known, Komi’s God Status. This and How she actually was given the title ‘God’ and after some really funny antics and cunningness by Najimi. I will not be writing about what happens for fear of spoiling the funny episode, as I believe that the fun is in the discovery. It the same as how watching ‘Saints Young men’ or ‘Saitama’ was for me and I would have hated if some amateur reviewer ruined it for me. I would probably have planned to kill them in 10 to 15 years after they did so from the date of the review.

So do check out, Komi can’t Communicate on Netflix and here’s to waiting another week for another episode.

Episode 4.

After Three well executed episodes, I was actually looking forward to this episode and honestly; it did not disappoint. I am quite excited to write this as I was for my previous reviews for Neotakus like ‘One punch man’ or ‘The way of the house husband’. Those two Anime are, in my opinion, the best in each of their own respective genres.

Now, in this episode 4 of Komi can’t Communicate, a new character and fellow student, Yadano Makeru is introduced. Who, unlike the other students who worshipped Komi, Yadano wanted to be better than Komi–the Class chosen ‘god’. To take a higher position than class president. She is thus the commoner who wants to beat god. While she went the opposite way of how others express their admiration for Komi, she also revered Komi’s god status. And as such, to be able to compete and win would be a feat like no other.

Episode 4 begins in a physical examination and, as said, enters Yadano, who automatically turned the physical into a competition. Of course, unknown to Komi, is determined to beat Komi in this physical exam.
The Funny thing about this scene is that, while Yadano had decided to compete with Komi, yet, choosing a physical exam is freaking hilarious where things like height and weight etc., are what the physical is all about. Realising that fact alone is pretty hilarious. How she despairs as she competes with Komi, who is absolutely oblivious to this, is quite hilarious. But after this “competition”, Yadano Makeru makes no other appearances. I hope to see her again in future episodes.

The anime then takes us to the next day when Tadano (Komi’s first friend and absolutely average guy) suddenly is kidnapped. But we will not know why until later in the episode. Ren Yamai makes her introduction. Someone who obsesses over Komi in a stalker-ish way. She also has pictures of Komi all over her room and also is the person who kidnapped Tadano. This is because she feels Tadano is too average and does not deserve to be in the presence of the Goddess Komi.

There are so many whirlwind moments in this episode, especially with the character Yamai and her obsession. What I like most is how the art and animation is done, especially to highlight the smallest of expression and emotions. And I do not mean the meaningful stuff but the weird acts or behaviours and expression of the character esp Yamai. There is a scene where Yamai was following Komi in the hallway, all creepily and stalkerly. Then a strand of Komi’s hair falls and how Yamai reacts, along with the brilliantly done artwork, sound etc., by the animators is just to die for. These small pieces of anime works is what really makes me love Anime. It’s a kind of humour that is not really found elsewhere. It’s kinda weird but I’m a weird counsellor in Shillong, so fuck it!!

This whole episode, apart from the start, puts Yamai in the leading Role and her dialogues, her expressions, her art is just brilliant. Her interactions with Tadano asking him if he prefers the woods, or the sea is so good. The scenes that followed and the scene before that also were just ripping my insides with my silent laughing. It requires a lot of paying attention to details in these episodes and needs the viewer to have a kinda twisted sense of funny-bone to like it. Otherwise they will not get it and would probably think it’s a let-down because they would rather watch a romcom type of episode between Komi and Tadano.

.

Although we do see some heart-warming scene between Komi and Tadano later in the episode and you can sense that there is some sort of relationship brewing there, so it’s worth to watch out for that later as the Anime progresses. In a way, the romance, if there will be one, is actually building up pretty well. It is not rushed and keeps us intrigued as to what will happen?

Overall, this episode is funny, at least for me it is. The addition of perhaps a preview of a future character who will compete with Komi, her classmate, Yadano Makeru will be something to look for and of course, the Weird and Cray-Cray Ren Yamai is a great character who can hold an episode on her own is a great addition to the series. But as it turns out, we have another friend added to the list of Komi’s 100 target, which makes a total of 4 out of the 100.
