One of the oldest and most reputed esports organisation, Evil Geniuses announced a partnership today with Fosun, the parent company of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC (Wolves). Wolves are a founding member of the English Football League and one of the major teams in the top tier English Premier League.
Fosun agreed to make a minority investment in Evil Geniuses, valuing the team at $255 million post-investment. Evil Geniuses are also the first esports team to have a presence in the 3 major regions of North America, Europe and Asia-pacific.
The partnership allows Evil Geniuses to use Wolves’ market expertise in the Asian region. The existing infrastructure can be used by the esports team to further strengthen their presence in the region. The partnership will also see Wolves branding featured on Evil Geniuses’ uniforms, as well as collaboration to create English and Chinese language content, sponsorship opportunities, and jointly branded merchandise.
Wolves’ general manager of marketing and growth, Russell Jones stated, “This is an incredibly exciting partnership for Wolves and Wolves Esports. We have very lofty ambitions in esports, and this partnership allows us to learn from the very best in Evil Geniuses.” Continuing on he says, “We’ll be pooling resources across analysis and performance as well as marketing and commercial to service and grow both organizations. We are looking forward to working with Evil Geniuses on a number of fan engagement initiatives over the next few months, and when travel routes allow, we will be encouraging our teams to visit and engage with one another,”
Wolves also have their own dedicated esports team which competes in FIFA, Rocket League and sim racing, among others. Apart from this, combining the world of traditional sports and esports, we have seen the likes of French Football Club PSG partner up with LGD a few years back. Wolves have recently been investing and partnering in quite a few gaming related ventures, probably aiming for a sizable presence in the esports sector, as the trend of companies making massive investments in the esports industry continues.
